In today’s cycling news, will Gilberto Simoni ride for the Rock?, Cameron Meyer wins Aussie TT Champs, Stijn Devolder toughs it out in Belgium and more…

  • Former pro cyclist Tobias Erler has come out of retirement to ride for the Iran-based Petrochemical Tabriz continental team.
  • Jose Rujano (ISD) says that he is going to the Giro d’Italia to win. He finished third in the race in 2005. He feels that he is the third best climber in the world after Alberto Contador and Joaquim Rodriguez.
  • Two-time Giro winner Gilberto Simoni could close out his career with Rock Racing, but only if the team retains its Pro Continental license.
  • Erik Zabel is expected to temporarily come out of retirement to race at the Six Days of Berlin.
  • New Milram signee Luke Roberts is expected to be a leadout man for Gerald Ciolek and he’ll make his debut in that role at the Tour Down Under. He feels that Ciolek is as fast, or faster, than Mark Cavendish.
  • An Italian prosecutor is opening an investigation into the Ambra Cavallini Vangi team for suspicion of giving banned substances to 18 year old rider Eugenio Bani. Bani was in the Italian Junior Leagues when he tested positive for the pregnancy hormone HCG. Bani claims that he was given substances and injections that he was told was for “recovery” purposes.
  • We noted yesterday that Lance Armstrong’s Mellow Johnny’s Classic was added to the Pro XCT series, but the Sea Otter Classic will be added as well.
  • Much of the Quick Step team is headed to Spain for some warm weather training miles, but Stijn Devolder is planning to stay home in Belgium, saying that the weather is not that bad and that he wants to maximize his time at home before the season starts in earnest.
  • Cameron Meyer (Garmin-Transitions) won the Australian Time Trial Championships yesterday. He swallowed up the 39km course in 50′52″, finishing ahead of John Anderson (28″) and Luke Roberts (32″).
  • Five time British cross-country MTB champ Jenny Copnall has announced her retirement from professional mountain bike racing. She says that she’ll be devoting her time to coaching and a number of other bicycle related projects.
  • René Haselbacher was eyeing retirement but decided to go for another year with Vorarlbeg-Corratec. He’s expected to make his debut with the team at March’s Tour du Langkawi.
  • Podium Cafe reports that the Fumiyuki Beppu/Skil-Shimano/Shack contract issue has yet to be resolved.
  • The financially struggling racing team Equipe Nürnberger has asked the UCI for an extension to January 15th to further pursue sponsors and financial guarantees.
