Last week, Lance Armstrong packed them in for the route presentation for the Giro. This week, it was Alberto Contador’s turn for the Vuelta a Espana presentation. The 64th edition (from 29 August to 20 September 2009) of the race , at 3260 km long, appeals to the Spaniard. The winner of all three major Tours immediately noticed that the number of mountain stages are up, but there are fewer time trial stages than the 2008 edition.

Here are the latest headlines from across the world of cycling:

At the Tour of Benelux, Edvald Boasson Hagen (Columbia) took stage six, while teammate Andre Greipel holds onto the overall lead. In the Stage 7 team trial, Raivis Belohvosciks (Scott – American Beef) took the win, and José Iván Gutierrez (Caisse d’Epargne) took over the lead. Greipel now sits 14 seconds back in fifth place.

Here’s the big bombshell: 17 of the 18 UCI Pro Tour teams and the organizers of the 3 major races (The Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta d’Espana) will not renew their licenses for next year. The organizers of the big races have had their difficulties with the UCI, most notably the Tour de France’s Amaury Sports Organization, so this was somewhat expected. Vuelta de Espana – Stage 17:After a very successful year, Daniele Bennati was understandably upset when it was announced that he was not selected for the World Championship team for Italy. He took his frustration out on the peloton at the Vuelta today.
There was an early two-man escape today, but the pelton was able to keep the breakaway under control. They were never more than six minutes ahead, and, with 34 km to go, their lead was whittled down to 2 minutes.
