Quite a bit of news today. Sorry for the late publication of yesterday’s news. I’m still getting used to the new Wordpress dashboard.
Land Rover has signed on to be the title sponsor for the Orbea development team based in Portland, OR. Land Rover-ORBEA will benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation and has two core missions, raising funds and awareness for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and developing young and up-and-coming cyclists. While the team is U.S. based, the riders are from around the globe. (MissingSaddle.com)

Lance, doping, transfers, hurt feelings and a little more today:
Depeche du Midi groups Lance Armstrong in with cycling’s worst culprits, including Michael Rasmussen, Ibin Mayo, Ivan Basso, Patrick Sinkewitz, Matthias Kessler, Floyd Landis, Ricardo Ricco, Andrei Kashechkin and Alexander Vinokourov. Of course, with the exception of Lance, all of those listed either doped, said that they intended to doped, or tried to elude doping tests. You can always count on the French media for fair and balanced reporting.

Here’s the latest headlines:
Okay, I like Chris Horner and think he’s a good racer, but does he really need to sit and home healing a broken collarbone and bitch about not being selected for the Olympics? He thinks that Jason McCartney is not a smart choice. Maybe if he had been selected he would have skipped Elk Grove and not had his crash, but what if he hadn’t? Same result – still sitting at home on the couch.

The bad news tarted with Ricardo Ricco and Leonardo Piepoli at the Tour de France, and got worse in the following weeks. Marta Bastianelli, the Women’s World Champion was next, testing positive for a banned stimulant/diet product in a test administered during the Under 23 World Championships on July 5th. Her news of her positive test was quickly followed by the announcement of positives on Paolo Bossoni (Lampre) and Giovanni Carini (S.S. Pagnoncelli) at the Settimana Tricolore. Now we hear that Emanuele Sella failed a July 23rd out of competition test for EPO.

We’ve been pretty heavy into TdF race coverage lately, but there are other things happening.
Bicycle manufactuer Scott is going to step up to be the lead sponsor of the former Saunier Duval team. They believe that the doping problems with Ricco and Piepoli were related to the individuals, and they are pledging a more rigorous anti-doping program.
Roche Pharmaceuticals placed a special molecule into the newest generation of EPO to make it easier to detect. The new drug (CERA) is released into the body more slowly than previous generations of the …

Well, the pros (and yours truly) have had a nice winter break, but the season is ramping back up, and the level of news coverage right with it.
It’s old news at this point, but I would be remiss if I didn’t note that Floyd Landis will have his hearing with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) starting on March 19th, most likely in New York. I’m pulling for him.
That will be a big day for me as well, as I expect to complete the upgrades on my bike that …

It’s still quite early in the year, but many of the Pro Tour teams are already gearing up the PR machines, introducing their 2008 teams to the public and holding early training camps. CyclingNews.com has a great directory of the team rosters here.
Saunier-Duval Scott is back with a fairly young squad (nine riders under the age of 24)after losing veterans David Millar and Gilberto Simoni. They are optimistic about having another strong season, but understand that it will be a challenge.
