Zabriskie takes first stage race win at the Tour of Missouri

Garmin-Slipstream’s Dave Zabriskie made a major achievement over the weekend, taking his first stage race victory at the Tour of Missouri. Zabriskie, who is known primarily as a time trial specialist, took over the race lead after a commanding win at Friday’s individual time trial in Sedalia.

USA Cycling sent out a news update. Here are some of the highlights:

The recent growth trends of participation in competitive cycling are continuing as USA Cycling this week exceeded 63,200 members for the 2008 season – an increase of nearly 2.7% compared to this week last year. USA Cycling finished the 2007 season with 61,564 licenses sold. Currently, mountain bike license sales are up over 2.6% while Road, Track and Cyclo-cross license sales are up nearly 3.6%.

I missed this one: I thought that Tom Boonen would keep quiet while riding in the Ster Elektrotoer, but in the fourth stage, when planning to lead out teammate Wouter Weylandt, Boonen got the “go for it” and took the win. Hey, he’s got spirit.
