2009 Vuelta a Espana – Stage 17 Results

Anthony Roux of Francaise des Jeux survived a long breakaway from km 6 to barely take the win today. Alejandro Valverde still sits atop the G.C., but there is a change below him as Robert Gesink has dropped down, presumably from a crash during the stage.

The teams and rosters have been announced for the Tour of the Algarve, starting tomorrow. There are 22 teams total, 11 of which have Pro Tour classification.
As previously reported, the race will mark the 2009 season debut of Astana’s Alberto Contador. Stijn Devolder is the defending champion and will wear race number 1.

The legal battles continue in the background, but at the forefront, the bicycle battles are on with all of the invited showing up to race at Paris-Nice. It’s nice to see the riders racing, not stuck in the middle of a bicker fest.
The 66th running of the race started with a 4.6km time trial in Amilly. Rain fell throughout the middle part of the race, and the entire day was probably a little cooler than the riders would have liked.
