Marianne Vos won the women’s world cyclocross championships on a cold and fast course, outsprinting Germany’s Hanka Kupfernagel and American Katie Compton.
The race got off to an action-packed start with a crash in the first turn. Compton emerged as the early leader, with Kupfernagel, Christel Ferrier-Bruneau (France) and Vos leading the chase. Sergio Paulinho, the sole representative for Portugal has dropped out of of fears that the pollution conditions in Beijing would irritate his allergies.
