Big changes at the Vuelta a Espana (Tour of Spain) today as Lampre-NGC’s Damiano Cunego takes the first real mountain stage and Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto) moves into the gold leader’s jersey.

Thomas Voeckler of Bouyges Telecom won the second stage of the Tour du Haut Var to overall victory at the Tour du Haut Var. He finished the traditional one-day Haut Var parcours ahead of David Moncoutié (Cofidis) and Chris Anker Sørensen (Saxo Bank).
It was Voeckler’s second win of the 2009 season after winning the Etoile de Bessèges two weeks ago.
Voeckler wore the Tour de France’s yellow jersey in 2004.

The teams and rosters have been announced for the 36th edition of the Tour of the Mediterranean Sea, starting tomorrow.
The race has seen a rise in its UCI classification, and as such, they have increased the amount of climbing in the race, with the final stage from Nice to Mont-Faron culminating in a mountaintop finish.
Favorites for the race include Spaniard Jose Ivan Gutierrez (Caisse d’Epargne), who won the race and will have two helpers in the person of Oscar Pereiro and Luis Leon Sanchez at his side. Also on …

The Vuelta continues its rush to Madrid. Today’s stage from Zamora – Valladolid is relatively short at 148 km and should not present a significant challenge to the competitors. While you couldn’t call it a flat stage, there are very few bumps along the way.
The pace was a little quicker than yesterday’s laconic march. Perhaps the riders are ready for this thing to be over.

Today’s stage travels south towards Madrid, encompassing 186.4 kilometres from Ponferrada to Zamora. Alberto Contador (Astana) started the day comfortably in the lead, with teammate Levi Leipheimer 1’17 behind.
It’s a hot day in Spain, and temperatures on the road are said to be upwards of 28 C (that’s 82F for those of you in the states). There is only one significant climb on today’s route, the category one Alto del Acebo, which comes just 1.6 km into the stage and heads up for the next 14 km.

Today’s stage went from Sabiñánigo to Zaragoza and was relatively flat except for the Alto de Monrepós, a Cat. 2 climb that comes just 34 km into the race.
Attacks started early, with Alessandro Ballan (Lampre), Manuel Quinziato (Liquigas), Juan Manuel Garate (Quickstep), Yaroslav Popovych (Silence-Lotto), Philippe Gilbert (Francaise de Jeux), Gianni Meersman (FdJ) and Andriy Grivko (Milram) going out hard, but they were caught at the foot of Monrepós.
