Connor Fields wins overall Supercross World Cup title after placing third on Saturday in Chula Vista

Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./Chase BMX) won the overall title as the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup wrapped up at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista on Saturday night. Olympic champion Mariana Pajon of Colombia took the women’s overall win while AmericanArielle Martin (East Spanaway, Wash./Intense BMX) was second overall.

Elite Men

After taking the win in Friday’s time trial Superfinal, Fields placed third in the Supercross final on Saturday. The 21-year-old won his quarterfinal and semifinal to make it into the eight-man main which also included Sam Willougby (AUS), Tory Nyhaug (CAN), Twan Van Gendt (NED), Liam Phillips (GBR), and fellow AmericansDavid Herman (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Free Agent Bikes), Barry Nobles (Sun City, Calif./DK Bicycles), andCorben Sharrah (Tucson, Ariz./Redbull).

Fields led the race until turn two when he was taken over by Olympic silver medalist Willoughby and Nyhaug who placed first and second.

When added to his win at World Cup #2 in Santiago del Estero and his third-place effort in the opening round in Manchester, Fields’ third-place finish in Chula Vista moved him from the number-two spot into the number-one spot in the final World Cup standings.

Crossing the line in fourth on the southern-California track was David Herman while compatriots Barry Nobles and Corben Sharrah were fifth and sixth. Twan Van Gendt (NED) and Liam Phillips (GBR) were seventh and eighth.

Elite Women

Four Americans made it into the main event in the women’s contest: Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn./Redline Bicycles), Dani George (Palmdale, Calif./Supercross BMX), Arielle Martin (East Spanaway, Wash./Intense BMX), and Friday’s time trial Superfinal winner Felicia Stancil (Lake Villa, Ill./GT Bicycles).

The 22-year-old Post led the whole race until the final turn when reigning Olympic champion Mariana Pajon (COL) got past her for the win. Post crossed the line second while Amanda Carr (THA) was third. Fourth and fifth went to Manon Valentino (FRA) and Dani George. Arielle Martin took a fall in the final turn to end up in sixth and second in the overall World Cup standings. Felicia Stancil and Laura Smulders (NED) were sixth, seventh, and eighth.
