Easton has announced a new offering to their product line that is straying a little from their typical products, the EC90 SL Crankset. Geared at the road, gravel, and cyclocross markets, the carbon crankset will be available in double and single ring set ups.
So you might be wondering, why cranks? Well, they ask the same question on the launch page. It wasn’t too long ago that Easton‘s parent company acquired Race Face, a company that started making mountain cranks before expanding into new territory. Race Face created the NEXT series of cranks that are some of the lightest on the market, but also durable enough for the abuse that mountain biking puts them through. The goal was to create something light, durable, easy to use, and work across a wide range of bikes and standards.
The EC90 SL crank features hollow carbon crank arms with the non-drive side mated up to a 30mm spindle, making this crank compatible with a large number of frames and bottom bracket standards. The drive side bolts on, and also has the Cinch System for the chainrings, which makes for quick ring changes. Two swap sizes of the direct mount rings, you simply unbolt the drive side crank arm, undo the Cinch lock ring, and swap rings. They system also allows you to run a 1x or 2x drivetrain with the same crank.
Graphics follow a similar look to the EC90 Aero 55 wheelset, going with a thin white outline of the brand’s name.
Pricing is where the EC90 SL crankset begins to hurt. Starting at $449.00 for the 1X crankset, and adding an additional $50 for the 2X, the SRAM Force CX1 crankset retails for about $175 less. If weight is a factor though, you’d save about 150-175 grams with the Easton.
