Since I’m not a climber, when I see the road start to go up, I always feel a little bit of dread. When I have a route planned, I can swap to my climbing page to see what is ahead, but when I’m just out riding, I don’t have that luxury. Wahoo changes that with the new Summit Freeride feature that will be available in early May as a firmware update and on new ELEMNT ROAM and BOLT computers.
Wahoo already has the Summit feature to provide detailed info about the climb ahead. For color screen devices, it includes not only the amount of climbing left, but also a color-coded elevation gradient of what is ahead. The Summit Segment feature adds in a list of significant climbs on the loaded route to help you plan your efforts.

The New Summit Freeride brings Summit functionality to any ride you take your ELEMNT on. By using preloaded maps and elevation data, the device can alert you to upcoming climbs, along with providing data on climbs in progress and completed. It can even provide a list of upcoming climbs that you can sort by difficulty. While on the climb, if you turn off on a different road, the ELEMNT device will recalculate and provide updated data on the climb.

“Summit Segments has already proven to be incredibly popular with both our recreational cyclists as well as the Pro Riders we support,” explained Mike Saturnia, Wahoo CEO. Summit Freeride is a fantastic new feature for cyclists who like to ride without using a pre-planned route. Getting out and exploring is at the heart of what cycling is all about, so we are extremely excited to have this update go live this Spring, as part of our continued commitment to add regular updates to our suite of ELEMNT Bike Computers.”
The new feature was developed alongside of the recently released dual-band GPS ELEMNT ROAM. Along with a 17-hour battery life, the ROAM’s rich color screen helps display detailed maps to let you explore anywhere you have maps loaded for. Summit Freeride helps make the new ROAM the most powerful GPS computer in Wahoo’s lineup.
Summit Freeride will be preloaded on new ROAM and BOLT computers starting May 2nd, and will be available as a firmware update for the latest ROAM and BOLTS users.
