Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) edged out Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) in the sprint to win Stage 1 of the 2025 Giro d’Italia. Pedersen’s Lidl-Trek teammates put on a show of force to reduce the grupetto down to the pure sprinters. Though he finished just inches behind Pedersen, Van Aert was visibly smashed when speaking to Eurosport reporters at the finish.
Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step) suffered a high-speed crash just 5km from the line, going over a curb and down to a lower sidewalk, unfortunately ending his trip to Italy.
GC favorites Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Juan Ayuso (UAE Emirates-XRG) both finished in the front group and head into the stage 2 TT on the same time.
Speaking in the press conference, Pedersen said: “When you win, it’s usually because the plan went to perfection. We had a clear plan. We wanted to make the race hard. It’s nice to give this victory to the team. I was not sure if I was able to win, it’s never given that you win a race, there are a lot of good riders here, all in good shape, I had to treat them with respect, but I believed in myself and in my team, knowing that Wout van Aert was also able to win. Even though my sport director told me he was struggling on the climb, I would never have underestimated a classy rider like him. I didn’t really expect attacks from the GC riders. To avoid that we set a high pace. I would have been surprised if anyone had attacked with the tempo [Giulio] Ciccone imposed. Now I can’t just enjoy myself during the remaining twenty stages. I’m hungry for more. I’ll do my absolute best to keep the Maglia Rosa tomorrow, sometimes I do well on short time trials. If I don’t, I hope for my team-mate Mathias Vacek to take over”.
