Joshua Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers) has won Stage 2 of the 2025 Giro d’Italia, the 13.7km long Tiranë-Tiranë Tudor ITT, ahead of Primož Roglič (Red Bull – Bora – Hansgrohe) and Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates XRG).
Tarling claimed his first Grand Tour victory in the time trial in Tirana after edging Australia‘s Jay Vine out of the hot seat. Roglic, who gained a significant amount of time up the final hill but missed the win by one second, became the new Maglia Rosa.
Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner Joshua Tarling said: “It’s a good way to start, it gives me confidence. This time trial was a goal of mine from the start of season, it was the classics first then I switched on to this. The course was just difficult with corners. It was stressful to watch the riders after me. Primoz went fast and gained more uphill than I would have liked. It’s my first Grand Tour win, it stands on top of the list of my achievements so far”.
The Maglia Rosa Primož Roglič said: “I’m happy, definitely! You don’t really plan to get the Maglia Rosa in such a time trial, it’s not the course that suited me the best. You only dream to have it in Rome, but happy with today’s result, although I don’t care much about results anymore. What I wanted today was to not to lose too much, but I’m healthy, my body is functioning well, I did a nice TT and I also have the Maglia Rosa. This one is a bit different from last time I had it. I’ll just enjoy it day by day, you never know when it’s the last one… There’s a tough climb tomorrow, it all depends how hard the pace will be. Mads [Pedersen] is in great shape, normally he’ll try to set up another sprint finish to get the Maglia Rosa back”.
