Wahoo KICKR ROLLR Updates For Enhanced Indoor Training Experience

Wahoo has a new firmware update for their smart roller trainer, the KICKR ROLLR.

In case you don’t know about the KICKR ROLLR, it is a smart trainer combined with rollers. Your rear wheel sits on two drums, allowing for natural motion of the bike without feeling locked. The smart resistance unit features a 10.5lb flywheel and works with or without an external . With a power meter like Wahoo’s PowerLink Zero pedals, it can offer resistance in level, ERG, or simulated (think Zwift) mode and can simulate up to a 10% grade and maximum watts of 1500w. Without a power meter linked, the KICKR ROLLR provides speed and cadence data to your or .

The front wheel sits in a chock and is secured in place with a locking arm that fixes your front wheel in place. The KICKR ROLLR can handle up to 2.1″ tires, giving you flexibility to use the trainer with your , gravel, , or bike. The in between beam is adjustable to your bike’s wheelbase (950mm to 1100mm) and locks in place with a flip of a lever.

Besides that natural movement of the rear rollers, the KICKR ROLLR makes it easily to quickly adapt to multiple bikes and riders, without having to remove the rear wheel.

So here’s what is new.

Consistent Power for Structured Training – KICKR ROLLR will now offer consistent power readings from the resistance unit. It won’t be as accurate as external power meters or direct drive trainers like the KICKR, due to the free-moving rear wheel, but it offers the opportunity for structured training for those without a power meter and the ease and flexibility of not having to remove your rear wheel. Consistent power isn’t meant for or those looking for pinpoint accurate power numbers. Instead, when using the same equipment (bike, gearing, tires, and tire pressure), the power numbers will be consistent from one ride to another.

Enhanced Virtual Riding Experience – That same consistent power mentioned above also translates into the virtual riding world. Now riders that don’t have a power meter can use the KICKR ROLLR for a more immersive riding experience of riding with a smart trainer. When signing in to your preferred virtual riding app, select the KICKR ROLLR as your power sensor source, and you’ll be all set. Again, if you are racing, having an external power meter will be more accurate, but for structured or training rides, Consistent Power has you covered.

And while it’s not new, users can connect their power meter to the KICKR ROLLR for enhance accuracy through the Power Meter Connect feature. By pairing your power meter with the trainer, it will use the more precise power data for to help guide the KICKR ROLLR in adjusting the resistance during your interactive workouts or virtual rides.

“We’re excited to announce this latest update to the KICKR ROLLR, bringing consistent power readings to a trainer already known for its simplicity and ease of use,” commented Gareth Joyce, CEO of Wahoo. “The KICKR ROLLR is a perfect choice for those riders starting their indoor journey thanks to its natural ride feel, quick set-up, and now the ability to train with power based data insights.”

To update your KICKR ROLLER, power up the unit by making sure it is plugged in and pair it in the Wahoo iOS or Android app. Then, select the unit in the Devices section, and select to update the firmware. Once installation is complete, you are all set.

The KICKR ROLLR is available through the Wahoo website or your favorite dealer locally and online. At $699.99, it’s not the cheapest smart trainer, but it is the only smart trainer that offers the ease of use and flexibility for a wide range of bikes and riders. The software update is available now for current owners and new users will have access to update during the initial set up.
