Powers and Anderson Take Day One of Trek Cyclocross Collective Cup

After battling the heat and thick grass at Clif Bar CrossVegas, riders dispersed to various parts of the globe to continue their seasons. For many Americans, Madison, Wisconsin, was the next stop for the Trek Cyclocross Collective Cup. Under cloudy skies and cooler temperatures, Elle Anderson (Cal-Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) and Jeremy Powers (Rapha-Focus) built off of their successful rides in Las Vegas to take wins.

Women’s Race

Nicole Duke (Duke-Spy) shot off the line to get the Marin and Spy Optics colors on the front, but Elle Anderson (Cal-Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) quickly passed her and opened up a large lead. Taking up the chase, Gabby Day-Durrin (Rapha-Focus), and Caroline Mani (Raleigh-Clement), lead the way with Meredith Miller (Cal-Giant Berry Farms-Specialized), and Crystal Anthony (Team Optimum-Kelly Benefits) following. Anderson’s lead continued to grow until the last two laps when Day-Durrin and Mani pulled away from their chasing group. The gap slowly closed, but as Anderson sprinted down the final paved straight, she was able to raise an arm in victory. Day-Durrin crossed the line four seconds back, with Mani following another three seconds later. Miller and Anthony rounded out the top five, twelve seconds back from Anderson.

Men’s Race

The men’s race took a different approach, as the lead group stayed together for the first half of the race. Jeremy Powers (Rapha-Focus) took the hole shot and took a group of riders with him that included Ryan Trebon (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com), Jeremy Driscoll (Raleigh-Clement), Tim Johnson (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com), Ben Berden (Raleigh-Clement), Danny Summerhill (K-Edge-Felt Bicycles), Jeremy Durrin (Team Optimum-Kelly Benefits), and Yannick Eckman (Cal-Giant Berry Farms-Specialized). Eckman, Johnson, and his teammate Trebon moved off the front of the group, but within a few laps, Powers and Berden came through and picked up Johnson along the way. With three to go, Powers made a move, and Berden countered to stay on his wheel. The two riders battled up a steep hill, where Powers engaged the supercharger and built a lead over the tattooed Belgian. Berden tried to follow, but was not able to stay on the wheel. Johnson got passed by a charging Trebon, who set his sights on Berden and Powers. Eckman was also able to pass Johnson, who then had Driscoll following him. With one to go, Powers was able to hold off his chasers, leaving Berden and Trebon to fight it out for the remaining podum spots. Trebon was able to pass Berden, but there was just not enough real estate left to catch Powers. Absolutely gassed from his effort to stay with Powers, Berden was able to hang onto third, with Eckman and Johnson completing the top five.
