Summerhill Waves the K-Edge/Felt Flag at Day 2 of the Trek Cyclocross Collective Cup

Danny Summerhill (K-Edge/Felt) might be serious about cyclocross, but you wouldn’t know it watching him before a race. Most riders are out riding laps of the course, warming up on trainers, and focusing on the task at hand. Instead, Summerhill was riding wheelies in the parking lot before the start of the men’s elite race at the Trek Cyclocross Collective Cup. For a while now, Summerhill has said that the less pressure he puts on himself, the better he races, and it seems to be paying off. After consistently placing in the top 10 at the USGP races last year, and fourth at the US National Championships of Cyclocross, he is back with a new winter sponsor for the 2013-2014 season.

Ryan Trebon (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) took the hole-shot, but Summerhill quickly forced an early selection. While some riders moved in and out of the group, by the third lap Tim Johnson (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld), Yannick Eckman
(Cal-Giant-Specialized), and Summerhill had created a gap with Ben Berden and Jamie Driscoll (Raleigh-Clement) leading four other riders chasing the leading trio. Berden and his new teammate Driscoll were able to bridge to the lead group, leaving Jeremy Powers (Rapha-Focus) to lead the chasing group.

As the laps ticked down, the original three of Johnson, Echman, and Summerhill were able to gap the Raleigh riders again, but a surge by Trebon almost pulled himself, Berden, Driscoll, and Shawn Milne (Keough Cyclocross p/b Felt) back into contention. Instead of waiting for his teammate to latch on, Johnson made and effort that just about sealed the day for the leading three. Eckman and Summerhill were able to stay on his wheel with two to go, but a charging Berden was able to bridge up with one to go. The effort might have taken its toll on the tattooed Belgian, as it came down to the final sprint to decide the day. Summerhill was able to turn on the gas, and made it to the line first. Johnson finished second, just ahead of Eckman. Berden finished 3 seconds back, and Trebon took 5th for his efforts.
