American riders collected 53 medals at the 2013 UCI Masters Track World Championships held at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, England. The U.S. contingent brought home 17 gold medals, 17 silver medals and 19 bronze medals through the seven-day event, which spanned Oct. 6-12.
The U.S. men earned 36 of the 53 medals, including nine gold medals, 13 silver medals and 14 bronze medals. Victor Copeland(Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Eddie B Cycling) and Keith Macbeth (Santa Cruz, Calif./MRBerkeley-White Oak) led the way as each earned a pair of gold medals. Copeland struck gold in the men’s 70-74 sprint and time trial while adding silver medals in his age group’s points and scratch races. Leo Menestrina (San Jose, Calif./Suffolk-SunPower Racing) also won four medals, earning a gold in the men’s 70-74 individual pursuit, two silvers – in the sprint and time trial – and a bronze in the scratch race. Michael Williams (Metairie, La.) won three medals, including a gold in the men’s 70-74 scratch race while placing second in the individual pursuit and third in the sprint. Patrick Gellineau (Brooklyn, N.Y./Somerset Wheelmen) finished second in the men’s 60-64 scratch race, third in the individual pursuit and third in the scratch race to collect three medals through the week. Mark Rodamaker (Los Altos, Calif./Performance Cycle Coaching) shined in the men’s 65-69 contests as he earned a silver medal in the sprint and bronze medals in the scratch race and time trial. Macbeth collected his two gold medals in the men’s 60-64 sprint and time trial.Jason Meidhof (Bethesda, Md./Clean Currents p/b Beyer Kia) won the men’s 35-39 points race and finished second in that age group’s individual pursuit to add two medals to the country’s tally. Jay Wolkoff (Altadena, Calif./Radsport Cycling Team) posted a pair of runner-up results, placing second in the men’s 55-59 sprint and scratch race. Brian Abers (Aloha, Ore./Bike Central) posted a pair of bronze-medal performances after he finished third in the men’s 45-49 sprint and time trial. Richard Voss(Littleton, Colo./Hammer Racing Team-TVG LTD.) also collected a pair of bronze medals after he placed third in the men’s 55-59 sprint and time trial. David Brinton (North Hollywood, Calif./Serious Cycling), Daniel Casper (Northfield, Minn./Revolution Cycle-Twin Six), James Tainter (Minneapolis, Minn./Erik’s Bike Club) and Timothy Mulrooney (Minneapolis, Minn./Synergy) teamed up to finish second in the men’s team pursuit. Casper added a gold medal to his haul after he won the men’s 45-49 individual pursuit. Tainter collected a silver medal after placing second to Casper while Brinton finished third in the men’s 45-49 individual pursuit to earn the bronze medal. Mark Sommers (Washington, D.C./Clean Currents p/b Beyer Kia) struck gold when he won the men’s 55-59 scratch race. Reid Schwartz (Chicago, Ill./University of Chicago) added a silver medal when he placed second in the men’s 65-69 time trial. Allen Vugrinicic (Palo Alto, Calif./Momentum Coaching Group) placed third in the men’s 40-44 time trial to ride away with the bronze medal. Wil Zegers (Weston, Fla./Team Alliance Environmental) also earned a bronze medal when he finished third in the men’s 50-54 time trial.
American women rode away from Manchester with 17 medals, including eight gold medals, four silver medals and five bronze medals. Tara Unverzagt (Torrance, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen) paced the women’s effort earning four gold medals and a silver medal. Unverzagt won the women’s 50-54 individual pursuit, points race, scratch race and time trial while placing second in the sprint to earn five medals through the week. Bonnie Woodbury (Escondido, Calif./Eddie B Cycling) earned three medals after placing second in the women’s 55-59 individual pursuit and third in the sprint and time trial. Cheryl Fuller-Muller (Cumming, Ga./Louis Garneau Factory Team p/b Fuji) landed on the podium three times after she won the women’s 40-44 scratch race, placed third in the individual pursuit and teamed up with Gea Johnson (Scottsdale, Ariz./FASTER Performance Center) to claim third place in the women’s team sprint. Johnson would also add gold medals in the women’s 45-49 sprint and time trial to her haul. Dana Walton (East Norriton, Pa./Team Alliance Environmental) collected a pair of medals after she won the women’s 40-44 sprint and finished second in the women’s 45-49 points race. Buffie Wuestewald (Sunnyvale, Calif./San Jose Bicycle Club) also earned a pair of medals after she earned the silver medal in the women’s 45-49 sprint and the bronze medal in the time trial.
