A Smooth Shave With Sportique – Shaving Oil, Shaving Cream, and After Shave Balm Review

A IMG_3767**Update – So, maybe shaving isn’t your thing, and a beard is more your style. That doesn’t mean you can’t still use Sportique’s shave products. Check out below how the Shaving Oil can also be used as beard oil.

Previously, we told you about Sportique’s products for before and during your ride, and after your work out. Now, it is time to tell you about their shave products. As we have done before, let’s start by telling you about the products, and then get to the reviews.

The Products

Shaving-OilUnless you are Robert Marion, shaving is a chore we have to deal with multiple times a week. Whether it is your legs or face, it needs to be done. The Shaving Oil is a good place to start. Jojoba, evening primrose, borage with natural vitamin E, and wheat germ oils are anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, and provide a smooth, close shave. Other botanicals are added to protect sensitive skin.

For those that like to keep the hair on their face, you can still use the Shaving Oil. Those same benefits that your skin get when you use it to shave, it also provides if you rub a little on with a beard. The various oils help to keep your face moisturized, and prevent “beard-druff”. The jojoba oil, one of the main ingredients is many of the beard oils out there, helps to protect your beard from drying out, especially in colder climates. After a hot shower, dry your beard with a towel. A little moisture helps. Apply about a dime size amount of oil into your hands, and rub it through your beard. At the end, use your fingers to comb through your beard to help seperate the hairs, and get any excess oil from your hands and onto your face. If you are in a dry climate, apply daily. In more humid climates, three to four times a week is enough.

Shaving-CreamYou can use the Shaving Oil on its own, or under the Botanic Oil Based Shaving Cream. Shea butter, olive, safflower and coconut oils are blended to moisturize and lubricate your skin. Calendula, chamomile, comfrey, and yarrow oils calm and sooth your skin. Dead Sea Clay is added for its anti-inflammatory and revitalizing properties.

After-Shave-BalmTo finish off your shave, the After Shave Balm has marine algae, comfrey, yarrow, chamomile, caldendula, and Aloe Vera to hydrate and regenerate your skin’s flexibility and suppleness. Allantoin and vitamin E sooth and calm your skin while jojoba and olive oils create a light, non-greasy base. Cypress, camphor, menthol, eucalyptus, spearmint, and ginger add antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, and leave you with an invigorating and razor burn free feeling.

The Review

I’ve tried a few different combinations of the shave oil and cream, and found I like to apply the oil first, and then the cream on top. Either can be used on their own for a shave, but the combination of the two works great for dry and sensitive skin.

After a shower, I dripped a small amount of the oil into the palm of my hand first, then rubbed them together, before applying to my face.  A little oil goes a long way, so start off with a small amount and add more as necessary.

While it was working into my skin, I ran my shave brush under the tap to add some water before working the lather in the shave cream. Five or six swirls around the cup was enough to start the soapy lather and start to release the floral smells of the shave cream. A few more swirls for good measure, and I had plenty of lather to apply to my face.

Depending on your razor, the style of shaving, and beard, you might want to shave with the grain first, reapply at least the cream, and shave against the grain. That’s a typical suggestion I’ve seen from many shaving gurus over the years, but if you are in a hurry, you should be able to shave both ways with one application, especially if you use the oil as your base. My 60’s era Gillette Slim Adjustable with Red Israeli Personna blades glided smoothly over my skin, with few nicks. The oil seemed to help the razor glide across my skin better, while the cream softened up the stubble. Other times when I was in a hurry, my Gillette ProGlide Fusion did the trick flawlessly using the same oil/cream combination.

After the shave, I used warm water to rinse off any remaining cream and excess oil before applying the After Shave Balm.  Like the oil, I dripped some of the balm into the palm of my hand, rubbed them together, and then applied to my face. You can smell the aloe and floral ingredients. When applying, there is a little bit of a tingle, which is the menthol and spearmint coming through to condition your face. Noticing that my dry skin isn’t limited to my cheeks, I’ve begun to apply the After Shave Balm to my entire face when I shave.

If you have the time to enjoy a good shave, the Sportique products are a nice change from shaving cream in a spray can and overly fragranced aftershaves that contain alcohol and other chemicals that can be bad for your skin. So enjoy the shave. Your skin will thank you.

Next week will be the final review in the series, touching on skin care products that are geared more towards women, including Shea butters, lip balms, and lip gloss. Sportique Brands is continuing their discount for Bikeworldnews.com readers, so use code BWN at check out to save 10% on your order.

  1. Sportique only does shaving creams and oils, along with many other skin care products. Sites like The Art of Shaving and West Coast Shaving are just a few of the sites that offer quality razors and accessories, whether you are looking for a modern multi-blade disposable, a safety razor, or a straight blade.
