In repeat performances of the 2013 Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic, Evelyn Stevens (Specialized-lululemon) and Kiel Reijnen (UnitedHealthcare) both used the slopes of the Manayunk Wall to claim victory on the final lap of the 2014 event.

Stevens seemed to get all of her bad luck out at the starting line, as she dropped her chain and seemed to be having problems getting it back on. Before the mechanic could get there though, she was able to get the chain back on, and was ready to roll.

Newly crowned US road champion, Alison Powers (UnitedHealthcare) took to the front early in the women’s event. After riding all together for the first lap, Powers decided to take a flyer before Lemon Hill, and it stuck. She continued to push the pace at the front, extending her advantage to over 1:10 before the field started to reel her back in. Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies was determined to get one of their riders up to Powers, but were not able to get any support from other teams to make the attacks stick. On the fourth trip up the wall, Powers was caught charging peloton and riders heard the bell for one to go as they crossed the line.

With Astana-BePink setting the pace on the final lap, multiple riders tried unsuccessfully to get away on the flat sections of the course. Coming down Main Street in Manayunk, Specialized-lululemon was able to get their train on the front before the technical corners leading up to the wall. Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies, Twenty16 Pro Cycling, and UnitedHealthcare slotted in behind as they made their final assent of the Wall. With her teammates bringing her up the climb, Stevens was able to launch midway up the kilometer climb. Lauren Hall (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) chased, but was passed by Lex Albrecht (Twenty16 Pro Cycling) near the crest of the Wall. Albrecht seemed to run out of road and steam, and was not able to catch Stevens who gave it one last push to cross the line for the win.  Albrecht crossed second, with Hall rounding out the podium. An elated Stevens could not thank her teammates enough for putting her in the best position possible for the win.

For Powers’ efforts at the front, she was able to claim the sprinters prize, along with the Queen of the Mountain award for points she claimed on Lemon Hill and the Manayunk Wall. Kristabel Doebel-Hickok (Tibco-To The Top) brought home the Miji Reoch Award for being the top under-23 rider, with her 11th place finish.

The men congregated behind the start line once all the women had finished their race. Notable call ups included returning champion and birthday boy Reijnen, newly crowned U.S. road champion Eric Marcotte (SmartStop), local Robin Carpetner (Hincapie Sportswear Development), who was missing his college graduation, which was taking place at the same moment as the race.

From the beginning, a strong breakaway had formed and began to pull away from the peloton. Riders included Jonny Clarke (UnitedHealthcare), Carpenter and Joseph Rosskopf (Hincapie Sportswear Development), Tom Zirbel (Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies), Blaz Jarc (Team NetApp-Endura), Clay Murfet (Astellas), Alex Wohler (Team Budget ForkLifts), and David Williams (5-Hour Energy p/b Kenda).  Their lead grew to about 2:00 at about 5 laps in, with Rosskopf dominating the KOM points on each trip up Lemon Hill and the Wall.

As the laps ticked down, so did the break’s advantage. Drapac, Jamis-Hagens Berman, and SmartStop did the lion’s share of the work to reel in the break, while UnitedHealthcare waited patiently. On the climb up the Wall to see two to go, Rosskopf gave one last effort to claim the KOM points as his break was caught. On the fast descent off the wall, a counter attack formed with Isaac Bolivar (UnitedHealthcare), Joseph Smalz (Hincapie Sportswear Development), Serghei Tvetcov (Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis), Joshua Berry (Team SmartStop), and Bruno Langlois (5-Hour Energy p/b Kenda).  Mistakenly, Langlois made a move up the wall thinking it was the final lap. As he celebrated his win, the peloton few by and he quickly realized his error. The final trip down Kelly Drive saw Jacob Kauffmann (Garneau-Quebecor) try to make a move to secure a win, but the big blue train of UnitedHealthcare were not about to let their birthday present to Reijnen be spoiled. Coming into the final turns before the Wall, Reijnen was situated perfectly behind his teammates, who left the last bit of work to their protected rider.

As the fans at the finish line started to see the riders come into view, it was Reijnen who appeared first. Celebrating with one arm in the air, the UnitedHealthcare rider took his second win and Jure Kocjan (Team SmartStop) and Dion Smith (Hincapie Sportswear Development) had to settle for second and third respectively. After the win, Reijnen was quick to praise his teammates for their hard work and dedication for the win.

Rosskopf was able to secure enough points in the breakaway to win the KOM award, while Berry took the sprint competition. Jacob Rathe (Jelly Belly) was the best of the under 23 riders, finishing
