Reijnen and Pic Double Up At Air Force Cycling Classic

Kiel Reijnen (UnitedHealthcare) and Tina Pic (Fearless Femme) take wins on both days of racing to wrap up the omnium titles at the Air Force Cycling Classic in Arlington, Virginia.

Clarenden Cup – Day 1

Coming off of a string of top five results in May, including the win at the Bank of America Wilmington Grand Prix, Pic used the speed that made her a multiple time U.S. national criterium champion to take the win ahead of Kendall Ryan (TIBCO/To The Top) and Christy Keely (Pepper Palace).

Colvita-Fine Cooking was the first team to attack the front, with Mellow Mushroom, Pepper Palace, and TIBCO/To The Top all trying their hands at making a break stick. Whitney Shultz, Olivia Dillon, and Lenore Pipes (Colvita-Fine Cooking), Kristen LaSasso, Laura Jorgensen, and Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom), Amanda Miller, Sara Headley, and Ryan (TIBCO/To The Top), Vanessa Drigo (Garneau Factory Team), and Keely all spent time on the front, but none could get away cleanly. Van Gilder was consistently present in the moves, which would help her land the black jersey for the Most Courageous Rider, as voted by the announcers. In the mean time, Pic continued to watch from the field, patiently waiting and keeping herself out of the wind.

With one to go, Mellow Mushroom started to congregate at the front to lead Van Gilder to the line. TIBCO/To The Top also organized their train, but it was Pic that led the way coming up the final straight. Ryan tried to hold her wheel, but could not and was left to fight off Keely for second place. Pic celebrated with one arm in the air and a huge smile, with Ryan and Keely taking second and third. Van Gilder held off Drigo to round out the top five.

The men’s race took a decidedly different path with a six rider breakaway sticking and lapping the field. Ben Frederick (Kelly Benefits Strategies/LSV) was the first to make a move, but Reijnen and others brought him back. Then Ruben Companioni (Jamis Hagens Berman), and Jared Nieters (Van Dessel Factory Team) tried to ride off the front, but were caught by Reijnen, Jonathan Clarke (UnitedHealthcare), David Guttenplan (SeaSucker-Guttenplan Coaching), and Bobby Lea (Custom Velo). This selection was able to stick, and by time the feed zone opened up at 50 km to go, the field was almost caught. Frederick went again, but was eventually brought back. Thinking the third time might be the charm, Frederick and Bernard Sulzberger (Drapac) spent time away trying to lap the field on their own, but were only able to dangle off the front until the final laps.

With 3 laps to go, UnitedHealthcare moved to the front to put Reijnen and Clarke into a position to win. Frederick and Sulzberger were able to stay off the front, but at one to go, their chance to fight for 7th and 8th place was over. Coming into the final stretch, Carlos Alzate (UnitedHealthcare) led Reijnen and Clarke to the line for the duo to take first and second. Companioni finished a few bike lengths behind, with Guttenplan and Lea crossing to finish fourth and fifth. Frederick took the Most Courageous Rider jersey for his repeated attacks off the front.

Crystal Cup – Day 2

After last year’s disastrous crash between riders and a USA Cycling official marshaling the course where a lead group was coming head on at the field on Crystal Drive, the course was redesigned to eliminate this from happening again.  The new six turn, 2 km course would be run for two hours by the men, and an hour by the women.

The men took to the course first, and things played out just as they had on Saturday. After some unsuccessful attacks, a break of six riders would be the decisive move of the day, with Reijnen and Clarke represented UnitedHealthcare, Lea for Custom Velo, Demis Aleman for Jamis Hagens Berman, Michael Stoop for Starlight Custom Apparel, and Jake Sitler for Van Dessel Factory Team.  As the laps ticked down, so did the distance between the breakaway and the back of the field.

The leaders caught the field with about 25 laps to go. Even though other attacks were launched, none were able to hold their lead going into the final laps. UnitedHealthcare moved the blue train to the front, but it was DC Velo p/b Beyer Automotive that surprised everyone when they took control with two laps to go. The next time through, UnitedHealthcare had regained the lead with several DC Velo and other riders following behind. Alzate again delivered Reijnen to the line first to secure the win and omnium title. Aleman and Lea followed behind in the bunch sprint. By virtue of his results on day two of racing, Lea moved to second place in the Omnium with Clarke finishing third.

It was Dillon who made the first move in the women’s race in an effort to upset Pic and the Fearless Femme squad. While she was able to impress the announcers enough to win the Most Courageous rider award, it was not enough to take the win. Mellow Mushroom, Pepper Palace, and TIBCO/To The Top all spent time at the front to bring the Colvita-Fine Cooking rider back. Pic meanwhile, stayed hidden in the field.

Dillion’s time on the front was ended with only a handful of laps left in the race. She didn’t stray too far from the front though, in anticipation for the finale. LaSasso led the field across the line with one lap to go and Pic was tucked nicely into third wheel. In the final stretch, Pic opened up the sprint with Ryan and Van Gilder. Pic came up the right hand side, with Ryan on her wheel. Van Gilder took the left, but could not match Pic’s speed.  Ryan again took second, with Van Gilder moving up to third. Pic clinched the omnium title and Ryan finished second overall with back to back runner up results. Van Gilder was able to edge Keely out for third place overall as the Pepper Palace rider finished third on the day.
