If Saturday’s rain was the fire and brimstone of New England’s Holy Week of cyclocross, the heavens shined on the final day of the KMC Cyclocross Festival.

With the sun shining, the course kept a tacky feel as it dried out. Arley Kemmerer (PB2 Pro Cycling) again took the holeshot, but Compton put in an attack that shed Kemmerer and Emma White (Cyclocrossworld.com). Helen Wyman (Kona) was the only rider able to hold onto Compton’s FMB wrapped Bontrager. The two rode off as the race for third began to heat up with Kemmerer, White, Rachel Lloyd (California Giant/Specialized), Courtenay McFadden (GE Capital/American Classic), and Kaitlin Antonneau (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) joining up behind.

Compton and Wyman continued on the front when Lloyd decided it was time for a move. The Cal-Giant rider was able to get away, but couldn’t make up time on the leaders. Kemmerer and McFadden tried to pull Lloyd back, but she put in another dig to hold her position in third.

At the front, Compton began to pull away from Wyman. The European champion wasn’t about to let her go without a fight, but the Brit wasn’t able to stay with Compton and had to settle for second place. Compton crossed the line with her arms up in celebration, with Wyman following behind 17 seconds later. Lloyd was able to gap the chase group and finished about a half minute behind the leader. Kemmerer and McFadden rounded out the top five.

For the men, Stephen Hyde was able to capture the biggest win of his career over a strong field. Powers, who won the previous day, did not start, as he is targeting only C1 UCI events this year in an effort to focus his efforts and gain UCI points needed for better starting positions. Even with the US champion missing from the start, the field was still stacked.

Hyde shot out from the start, and his gap of a few bike lengths started to grow quickly. Realizing it could be the winning move, Lukas Winterberg (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) bridged up to the leader, and the pair started working together to increase their lead. Behind, the chasers were in no hurry to reel them back in.

Multiple riders tried to make a move to bridge up, or at least solidify the final spot on the podium, but the star studded chase group would not let them go.

With two to go, Winterberg lost contact with Hyde, and dropped back quickly. Jamey Driscoll and Ben Berden (Raleigh-Clement) were charging hard to try and bring back the leaders, and eventually caught Winterberg. The trio rode together, slowly chipping away at Hyde’s lead. The leader would not back down though, and kept pushing as hard as he could. His lead shrank down to under 10 seconds, but with one turn left, Hyde knew the win was his. The JAM Fund/NCC rider zipped up, and as soon as he saw the coast was clear, he raised his arms in celebration, crossing the line to take the biggest win of his career.

Driscoll’s late efforts paid off and he crossed the line for second and his teammate, Berden, took third. Winterberg was able to stay with the group, and finished fourth, with Justin Lindine (Redline Factory/NBX), who was struggling to stay with the chase group, took fifth.

“This is huge, I’ve been dreaming about this”, said an elated Hyde. “This means a ton to the JAM Fund. The JAM Fund is a development program, but it goes so much farther than other development programs. It teaches you how to be a professional, from the ground up. We spend every second with Powers and everyone involved in it. They hand feed us everything and make us work for it. It’s the most beautiful program out there.”

This now makes three UCI wins in four weekends of racing for Hyde. Day two seems to be his day, after winning Nittany Lion Cross, Charm City Cross, and now Providence, and finishing in the top 10 in each of those events on the first day. In fact, Hyde has not finished lower than ninth this season at a UCI cyclocross event.  Hyde had shown similar results in the 2013-2014 season, before a knee injury sidelined him for the rest of the season. With rest and physio, he came back, riding a strong road season with Astrellas, and is poised to continue his winning ways for JAM Fund/NCC.
