World Bicycle Relief celebrates community of trailblazers during Bike Month

  • Ron

World Bicycle Relief (WBR), a global nonprofit and social enterprise mobilizing people in developing countries through The Power of Bicycles, is celebrating “Trailblazers” in the countries it serves who are using the bicycle to make a positive impact, throughout Bike Month in May. As part of the May campaign, WBR is encouraging supporters to join its “Trailblazer” program in an effort to create sustainable economic and social change in rural developing regions worldwide through a powerful recurring giving community.

Recurring monthly donations empower people like Ramadahn Bakari , a Community Health Volunteer, to care for their communities with bicycles.  Bakari is responsible for 105 households in Kakamega County, Western Kenya and was walking up to 8 kilometers to see patients, limiting him to only two to three visits per day. After he received a specially-designed Buffalo Bicycle, Bakari is now able to visit up to 10 households each day and provide vital care to more families.

In developing countries, distance prevents children from attending school, the sick from receiving care, and entrepreneurs from earning enough to feed their families. A high quality, rugged bicycle can change all of that. The efficiency and productivity a bike provides allows individuals to accomplish much more in a single day and pedal into a new, brighter future.
By signing up to become a “Trailblazer”, supporters join a movement of passionate individuals who are helping to mobilize people in rural developing countries by providing life-changing bicycles to those most in need. Trailblazers receive an annual letter from World Bicycle Relief co-founder, FK Day, as well as sneak peeks at WBR news, videos, reports and special updates.

A donation of just $13 a month will provide one bicycle per year to a student, healthcare worker or entrepreneur, and data shows each bicycle changes an average of five lives. All first-time recurring donations made in May will also be matched 1:1 up to $5,000 by Mike and Jo Anne Ruby of Rotary District 6000, exponentially increasing the impact.

Since 2005, World Bicycle Relief supporters have provided more than 400,000 bicycles to students, healthcare workers and entrepreneurs in 19 countries. That’s two million lives changed. But this is just the beginning. Together, we can mobilize millions more to achieve their goals and follow their dreams. Together we can make a difference.
