2018 Giro d’Italia: Stage 11 Results

  • Ron

Mitchelton-SCOTT’s Simon Yates held off Sunweb’s Dutchman Tom Dumoulin to win his second stage of the 2018 Giro d’Italia and extend his lead in the overall standings after an explosive conclusion to Stage 11 in Osimo.

Team Sky’s Chris Froome continued to under perform, and with few stages left in the race, looks to miss his chance at a Giro-Tour double.

Yates and Dumoulin, the two favourites for the GC, were part of the breakaway and as they got to the end of the stage it was Yates who acted as he burst from the pack.

Dumoulin reacted immediately, knowing he couldn’t afford to lose any time, but he didn’t have to legs to match the Yates. Dumoulin finished 2 seconds back, not really damaging his G.C. position, but not getting any closer to the top of the podium, either.

Today’s stage offered up a tribute to the late Michele Scarponi. The stage passed by his hometown and there was a nice moment during the intermediate sprint as Luis Leon Sanchez led the break in front Scarponi’s friends and family.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, Yates said: “We decided before the stage that we wouldn’t chase because normally on such a finale there are faster guys like Tim Wellens. Other teams did that for the stage win. The plan was that if it came back I would, of course, try. I’m glad to getting more time on Tom Dumoulin. He was chasing me and he looked better than other days on steep finishes. He’s getting better as the race goes on.”
