2020 Giro d’Italia: Stage 12 Results

  • Ron

Jhonatan Narvaez claimed his first Giro d’Italia stage win at Cesenatico, the second for Ecuador after Jonathan Caicedo atop the Etna and the third for Team Ineos Grenadiers after Filippo Ganna’s two successes. He soloed to victory in the rain after Ukraine’s Mark Padun of Bahrain – McLaren had a mechanical. Breakaway companion Simon Clarke (EF Pro Cycling) closed in third place.

There was no change in the overall classification with João Almeida (Deceuninck-Quick Step) keeping the Maglia Rosa for the tenth consecutive day.

The stage winner Jhonatan Manuel Narvaez said: “I’ve won a good stage of the Giro d’Italia. Fortunately, I’m a rider who has no problem with the rain and the cold. It’s been a long stage but I did it! When Padun punctured, my sport director asked me to wait a little bit but with the adrenaline in the middle of the racing, I could feel I was going for the stage victory. I refuelled myself very well so I had enough to eat and drink in the last ten kilometers. It’s been a difficult year. We’ve stayed at home for a long time so I really enjoy the Giro. It’s a really nice race.”

The Maglia Rosa João Almeida said: “This one was hard! It’s been almost six hours of racing with the rain and cold almost all the way. Mentally, we have to be strong and prepared for this. Today’s stage winner also came from Axel Merckx’ development team, which was the right step for me before the WorldTour. I hope for this team to continue developing talents in the future.”
