It seems like the shift to tubeless continues year after year, but not everyone is making the transition. For many brands, their R&D budgets are focused on the new technology, but Pirelli continues to also support the tried and true option. That’s why they have released updates to their SmarTUBE TPU tubes.
The new models focus on road and gravel, urban, and e-bike markets. SmarTUBE inner tubes are made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), which has a high elasticity and mechanical resistance. TPU is also extremely light when compared to traditional butyl rubber tubes. Latex has been the gold standard for premium tubes, providing a supple ride and lighter weight, but isn’t as durable as butyl rubber.
The new SmarTUBE TPU inner tubes pack down to an extremely small size. It makes them easy to pack into your saddle pack or jersey pocket, and are about half the size of a corresponding butyl rubber tube, while still remaining airtight. This makes them a great option, even for those running tubeless, as a backup in case they have a puncture that sealant can’t stop.
The new SmarTUBE EVO road tubes match the performance of latex, at about half the weight. The new EVO offers 5% less rolling resistance compared to the already fast SmarTUBE, making them a great match for the Pirelli P Zero line.
The EVO is only available in a 700cx25-28 size, with Presta valves in 42, 60, and even 80mm lengths.

The SmarTUBE X is a brand-new inner tube for gravel, urban, and e-bikes. The X replaces the original Cinturato SmarTUBE to pair with the Cinturato and Angel tire lines. The SmarTUBE X is three times thicker than the previous version, adding more puncture protection.
The Cinturato SmarTUBE X will be available in 700Cx28-40 and 700Cx40-50 and the Angel SmarTUBE X will be available in 700Cx28-42 and 700Cx42-62. Both models and all sizes will be available in Presta and Schrader valves.
The full line will be available by the end of September, though you can find some models out now.
