Stage 9 of the 2024 Tour de France served up four categorized climbs along with fourteen gravel sections that kept up the excitement. In the end, it was Frenchman Anthony Turgis of the Total Energies squad who came out on top in the final sprint. Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) and Derek Gee (Israel Premier Tech) rounded out the podium.
The pace was relentless all day long – 46.0km/h on average – but the early attackers still had the power to go all out in the last 12 kilometres, with Jasper Stuyven leading the way until he was caught inside the last kilometre.
Turgis was part of that early group of attackers along with Jasper Stuvyen (Lidl-Trek), Pidcock, Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost), Gee, Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan), Alex Aranburu, and Javier Romo (Movistar Team). A chase group consisting of Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty), Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Rui Costa (EF Education-EasyPost), Jakob Fuglsang ( Israel-Premier Tech), Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla) and Rasmus Tiller (Uno-X) kept the speeds up throughout the stage.
Back in the peloton, Tadej Pogacar was attacking to open an advantage over his GC rivals. At times, it looked like Vingegaard was struggling to stay with the race leader, but in the end, they all stayed together to maintain status quo in the battle for the lead going into Monday’s rest day.
