Casper Van Uden (PicNic- PostNL) won the finish line sprint in Stage 4 of the 2025 Giro d’Italia, his first sprint in a three week race and, at age 23, arguably his biggest win ever. The win is a upset for Mads Pedersen who kept the maglia rosa, but lost a major leadout man in a crash in the final kilometers. It is, however, a major victory for PicNic-PostNL, a team that was facing relegation from the UCI World Tour.
The day also saw an all Dutch podium hot favorites Olav Kooij and Maikel Zijlaard rounding out the podium at the end of a long sprint.
Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner Casper Van Uden said: “I won today because I really wanted it. Everyone in the team believed in me. It’s a good feeling to pay back the believers. It means a lot. If you have a chance to do a Grand Tour and you win in it, not many people can say they have done it. Maybe I have to believe a bit more in myself and today will help for that. When you’ve done it once, you know it’s possible so you can keep fighting for it. Sometimes it takes longer for someone to reach a win at this level. The hotel was close so the recon we did helped us to win today”.
In the fight for the Maglia Rosa, runner up Primoz Roglic reclaimed two seconds in the Red Bull KM while Isaac Del Toro overtook his team-mate Juan Ayuso as he bagged four seconds.
The Maglia Rosa Mads Pedersen said: “I expected every sprinter to be there to win. It was quite an easy day, it doesn’t surprise me at all that all the sprinters were in contention. My team-mate Soren Kragh Andersen crashed, it caught me behind and I had to chase for 15km to make it back to the front. There we had to use some energy we didn’t want to. Daan Hoole had to use all his energy to bring us back, so we lost the train, basically. It is what it is, we managed quite well to finish and get some points for the Maglia Ciclamino. It was special to wear the Maglia Rosa in a road race today and not in a time trial that lasted fifteen minutes or so on Saturday. This jersey is so special for Italy. It’s an incredible experience. I really enjoyed it”.
