  • Ron

Richard Carapaz attacked the peloton with 9km to go to take the win on Stage 11 of the . keeps the .

At nearly 32 years of age, Carapaz is the oldest rider to win a Giro d’Italia stage since May 28, 2023, when Mark Cavendish won the Rome–Rome stage at 38 years and 7 days. This was his first victory in 308 days, his last win came on the Superdévoluy stage at the Tour de France. Today’s triumph is his 4th career stage win at the Giro, and his 8th overall in a Grand Tour.

We picked up coverage with about 70km remaining in the stage. A group of five enjoyed a lead that was hovering around 2 minutes over the Maglia Rosa group: Pello (Bahrain Victorious), Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla), Lorenzo Fortunato, and Wout Poels (XDS Astana). Fortunato sits more than 6 minutes off the race lead with the others having a significantly larger time gap to make up to pose any danger to the G.C.

As the escapees neared the Toano climb, their advantage had ballooned just slightly to the 2’30” mark and they were still working together, focused on collecting additional KOM and sprint points.

With 15km to go, the leader’s advantage had shrunk to 50 seconds. Mads Pedersen, in the points jersey, was at the head of the peloton, with Del Toro about 8 wheels back.

With 10km to go, Wout Poels attacked his break companions, but it came too late as the gap had narrowed to 10 seconds.

With 9km to go, the break was caught, prompting to explode out of the peloton. Del Toro briefly went on the chase, but fell back.

4km remaining and Carapaz still had a lead of nearly 30 seconds. UAE and were leading the chase.

Carapaz passed the 1km mark with an 18 second lead and ended up crossing the line 10 second ahead of Del Toro.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Richard Carapaz said: “This stage being a quite difficult one and many people suffering since the first climb, I had good legs and I caught the opportunity to attack at the indicated moment. It could have split the group and I found myself alone, so it’s been a time trial for me till the finish line. I wasn’t disappointed yesterday. I know time trialing isn’t my forte. I saved everything I could. It gave me confirmation that I have good legs and I can continue fighting. It’s something special and emotional to win this stage because it comes after a lot of work and I wanted to please my family, my friends. I’ll try till the end to win the Giro. We have great opponents. I won’t stop fighting until we arrive in Rome”.
