Wout van Aert worked as a leadout man for Olav Kooij (Visma Lease-A-Bike) to take the win in Stage 12 of the 2025 Giro d’Italia. Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates–XRG) holds onto the maglia rosa.
Andrea Pietrobon, Giosuè Epis, and Manuele Tarozzi caught the camera’s attention today, riding off the front until just 35km were remaining, and capturing some sprint and KOM points along the way.
With the last 70km of the stage largely flat, it was ultimately expected to be a day for the sprinters, and indeed, the peloton was coming into the final part of the stage at over 70km/h. The sprint teams needed to navigate a hard left turn inside of the final kilometer and the closing meters came down to a five man sprint with Turner, Van Uden, Groves and Pedersen for the line.
Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Olav Kooij said: “I was waiting for this one! We came to the Giro also with Simon [Yates] being in good position on GC and Wout [van Aert] taking a stage win. In the two previous sprints, not everything went right. I’m really happy that today it’s all good. Only Wout can do such a long lead out like today’s. I got an extraordinary support. I have to thank my team-mates, also the rest of the team did a fantastic job. We didn’t want to be too far in the last curve. I could jump on the wheel of Casper [van Uden] and pass him. We try our best every day to win more and get a good GC with Simon”.

The Maglia Rosa Isaac Del Toro said: “I was thinking it would an easier day than it happened to be with the wind and everyone wanting to be at the front, attentive and all this, so we caught the breakaway a bit too early. With the team I managed to take a few more seconds at the Red Bull kilometre although we expected to catch the breakaway later on. We managed to pull at the last moment to try and take some seconds, I’m happy with that. Every cyclist in the world wants to win Giro one day, I worked for my current team-mates before, we have no problem of ego, we use this situation to the favour of the team, we’re happy, no stress”.
