Niko Denz made a well-timed attack from a breakaway group of 11 to win Stage 18 of the 2025 Giro d’Italia. Mirco Maestri (Polti VisitMalta) and Edward Planckaert (Alpecin-Deceuninck) were part of the sprint one minute later to finalize the podium.
It’s the third stage victory at the Giro (and seventh as a professional) for Nico Denz, following his wins in Rivoli and Cassano Magnago in 2023.. The Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe team claims its 14th stage win at the Giro, and its first under the new title sponsor. The team’s last two victories came in 2023, still as BORA – hansgrohe, both taken by today’s winner, Nico Denz.
No change in the G.C.
The day was all about the breakaway, with the GC leaders probably enjoying a chance to rest their legs a little bit as the race entered its final days. It was a big one, consisting of Nico Denz (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe), Kaden Groves, Edward Planckaert, Fabio Van den Bossche (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Alessandro Verre (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Edoardo Zambanini (Bahrain Victorious), Stefano Oldani (Cofidis), Dries De Bondt, Stan Dewulf, Dorian Godon, Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Rémy Rochas (Groupama-FDJ), Ben Turner (Ineos Grenadiers), Francesco Busatto (IIntermarché-Wanty), Daan Hoole, Mads Pedersen, Mathias Vacek (Lidl Trek), Jon Barrenetxea (Movistar), Matteo Moschetti (Q36.5), Mattia Cattaneo (Soudal-QuickStep), Davide De Pretto, Felix Emgelhardt (Jayco AlUla), Alex Edmondson (Picnic PostNL), Mattia Bais, Giovanni Lonardi, Mirco Maestri (Polti VisitMalta), Wout Van Aert, Dylan Van Baarle (Visma | Lease a Bike), Rick Pluimers, Yannis Voisard, Larry Warbasse (Tudor), Filippo Magli, Martin Marcellusi, Manuele Tarozzi (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè), Diego Ulissi, Nicola Conci and Christian Scaroni (XDS Astana).
When we picked up coverage with about 80km remaining, the gap was close to five minutes, but it had opened to over a 7 minute advantage with 68km to go. With only the Cat. 3 Ravellino climb remaining, it seemed clear that the stage winner would come from the break.
The word is that no one in the break was within 40 minutes of Maglia Rosa Isaac Del Toro’s lead.
Mads Pedersen and Christian Scaroni were racking up their respective sprint and KOM points along the way.
As the break crossed the Red Bull KM, it was Tarozzi and Marcellusi making a move with Rochas on their tail. And they quickly opened a gap of 25 second over the rest of the break.
With 42km to go, the gap was nearly 11 minutes to the GC gruppo.
Marcellusi was the first to sit up, with the rest of the leading trio easing up soon after. Another attack went almost immediately after, but it didn’t stick.
As the race entered the final 30km, there was a group of eleven that had opened a gap of 24 seconds over the rest of the break. Nico Denz and Larry Warbase were in their as well as some other strong riders: Panckaert, De Bondt, Hoole, De Pretto, Edmondson, Maestri, Van Baarle, Magli, and Conci.
The leading group now led the rest of the break by nearly a minute and a half with 25km remaining. They were now on the closing 12.5km circuit that will be lapped twice, and unlikely to be caught.
And then it was Nico Denz opening up a small gap with about 17km to go.
Denz continued to push to the line, and had a 45 second advantage with 2km to go.
Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Nico Denz said: “This is probably the most emotional of my victories at the Giro. Losing Jai Hindley early then the whole team, staff included, was fully committed to help Primoz Roglic win the Giro. We spent two months in altitude for that. I was three months away from home to prepare for the Giro. A dream was lost when we lost Primoz. We’ve thought all this hard work was for nothing. Luckily things turned around. We motivated ourselves for Giulio [Pellizzari] to do a good GC. To win here today on father’s day [in Germany], that’s for papa. It’s pretty special. When Primoz left the Giro, I went through the Garibaldi [the road book], I had to plan and get the freedom to go for it today. I made this one break. Then it was just about following my instinct. Our group was collaborating in the finale. I thought I’d give it a shot with 19km to go. I got a small gap. I just went and here I am!”
