Jhonatan Narvaez (UAE Team Emirates XRG) has won stage 4 of the 2026 Giro d’Italia, the 138 km long Catanzaro-Cosenza, ahead of Orluis Aular (Movistar Team) and Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek). Narvaez’s teammate Jan Christen animated the closing kilometres with a late attack and moved into the maglia bianca as best young rider.
The key move came inside the final 2km when Christen launched a sharp acceleration on the technical run-in. The move forced the main favourites onto the defensive and set the scene for Narvaez’s sprint.
The young Swiss rider’s attack softened up the opposition perfectly for Narváez, who responded moments later with a powerful acceleration of his own.
“This victory means a lot for me,” Narvaez said after the stage. “I want to send thanks to my family, my wife and my team who have been a great support during all this time I was out injured and preparing for this race. Obviously I would also like to dedicate this to my teammates who crashed on stage 2 and are no longer here in the race. I wish them a good recovery.
“In the finale I took the corner at 700m to go in a really good position and then it was just all about the legs in the sprint. I’m really glad I could deliver this victory,” he concluded.
Giulio Ciccone is the new Maglia Rosa as he leads the General Classification.
“I’ve had many difficult moments at the Giro. The last one was one year ago when I left after a crash with a great GC result looming when we needed that result as a team,” Ciccone told reporters. “But I also experienced beautiful moments at the Giro and today’s pay me back for all the bad luck, the injuries, the Covid, etc. The decision to defend the Maglia Rosa will be taken by the team as always. Let’s bear in mind that we came to the Giro with a team that is at 80% sprint orientated and we have Derek Gee-West for GC while some teams here are fully built around a GC leader. You don’t improvise a GC defence. We have to be realistic. But I can put forward my good condition, my desire to fight that remains undisputed… I’d like to bring the Maglia Rosa as far as possible. I’d love to climb the Blockhaus with this jersey but up there, it would be very hard to retain it against climbers like Jonas Vingegaard”.
