  • Ron

In the first stage of the 2026 , Jonas Vingegaard surprised no one by riding away from the rest of on Blockhaus with 5.5km remaining. Giulio Pellizzari was the only opponent to try and hold his pace but he had to surrender while Felix Gall opted to climb at his own rhythm and crossed the finishing line with a slim deficit (13”). Jai Hindley, the last winner at the same place in the Giro d’Italia four years ago, finished third at 1’02”.

Afonso Eulalio courageously defended his . He got dropped 6km from the top and posted a deficit of 2’55” that enabled him to keep leading the race with 3’17” over Vingegaard.

Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner Jonas Vingegaard said: “I’ve been waiting for this stage since I saw the route. It made it a nice day to take the stage win. To have now at least one win in each of the Grand Tours is special. When I attacked, I expected Giulio Pellizzari and other guys to try to follow. He followed for a while, then I went, it is super nice to pay the team back for all the hard work. I’m not surprised by Felix Gall being not far off. He’s a super good climber, he showed it many times in the few past years also, he can push a lot of watts, he showed that again today. In the last climb, there was a lot of wind, sometimes a side wind, sometimes a head or a tail wind. I was trying to find the right moment to attack according to the wind. I’m just happy to win a stage and especially this one. The Blockhaus is an iconic finish in Italy”.

The Maglia Rosa Afonso Eulalio said: “I’m happy because to keep the Maglia Rosa was one of the objectives for today. I tried to avoid suffering as much as I could. In the finale, I exploded. Had I not had along, I probably would have lost one or two more minutes. I was at the limit until 6km to go when I got dropped. These guys were flying while I was just trying to survive. I said this morning that it would be fine if I’d lose two or three minutes. It’s three, that’s acceptable. It was a super long stage with a hard climb at the end and windy conditions. We all knew that Jonas Vingegaard is one of the favourites for winning the Giro. But I still want to keep fighting to retain the Maglia Rosa as long as possible”.
