One year after he prevented Mathieu van der Poel from winning a stage of Tirreno Adriatico as he managed to stay away, breakaway artist Fredrik Dversnes did it again in Stage 15 of the 2026 Giro d’Italia. This time it was against the top sprinters in the streets of Milan. The Norwegian outsprinted his Italian companions Mirco Maestri, Martin Marcellusi and Mattia Bais. Paul Magnier won the bunch sprint for fifth place and moved back into the Maglia Ciclamino while Jonas Vingegaard reached the third rest day with his second Maglia Rosa in the bag.
Speaking in the press conference, Dversnes said: “My stage win at Tirreno Adriatico last year also came from a breakaway, so it’s becoming my speciality in Italy. My celebration came from a joke inside our team, meaning that today I’m the one fixing it. We’re all Norwegian and Danish in the team, we speak the language we were born with, so the atmosphere is great. Our breakaway today was formed of very strong ‘motorbikes’. I understood with 5km to go that we could make it, as I couldn’t see the bunch behind. During the whole time at the front, no one said any word, everyone just did his job”.
The Maglia Rosa Jonas Vingegaard said: “Obviously, to wear the Maglia Rosa has been a dream coming true. I didn’t sleep very well last night, not because of the win but because it was very warm. We got to the hotel a bit late but it was a good night after a nice dinner. Riding into Milano in the Maglia Rosa is a great way to honour such a special jersey in cycling. I want to thank the organisers and judges to listen to us and neutralize the times after we realized it would be better for our safety. I felt pretty good on the bike today. It was very warm but we managed to go deal with it”.
