Jonas Vingegaard showed no mercy to his opponents as he won Stage 20 of the 2026 Giro d’Italia at Piancavallo, his fifth mountain stage win of the race. The win came the day after his teammate Sepp Kuss claimed the only other uphill finish.
After Giulio Ciccone secured the Maglia Azzurra, the Dane rode away from the group of the favourites 11km before the end. Afonso Eulalio defended his Maglia Bianca in style against Davide Piganzoli.
Speaking in the press conference,Vingegaard said: “To become one of the eight riders who have won all three Grands Tours is a bit unreal for me. It’s hard for me to realise. I’m really looking forward to being reunited with my family tomorrow in Rome. I don’t know what to expect from this last day of the Giro. I wouldn’t say it’ll be a relief, it’s more about happiness, also for my teammates after all the great work they have done for three weeks. Today I didn’t worry about the climbing time. I just wanted to win the stage and finish off the work of my teammates. We gave Davide Piganzoli the chance to go for the Maglia Bianca, he didn’t have to lead me out today even though Sepp Kuss was not at his best. Unfortunately he couldn’t take it but Afonso Eulalio also deserves to win it. It was nice that I could win with this special Maglia Rosa and honour the victims of the earthquake fifty years ago.”
