Paul Seixas took emerged victorious in the 2026 Giro d’Lombardia after a disappointing world championship. He soloed with 18km to go while climbing Civiglio and didn’t give a chance to chasers Enric Mas and Giulio Ciccone to catch up with him on the San Fermo della Battaglia.
Seixas is the first Frenchman to win a Monument since Julian Alaphilippe at Milano-Sanremo in 2019, he’s also the youngest ever winner of Il Lombardia.
In the press conference, Seixas said, “The plan was to attack on Civiglio, I just did it a bit before I wanted to, only 2km after the start of the climb because I expected a higher pace and I was hoping to crest in first position with at least 15” lead so nobody could catch me. I knew the rest of the course was nice for one man solo. It was exactly the type of effort I could manage alone. I didn’t take any risk in the downhill. It’s beautiful and crazy to win a Monument. I don’t really care about being the youngest winner, I just care about winning. I hope it’ll be inspiring for young riders from my country as much as Thibaut Pinot’s win eight years ago was inspiring for me. I skipped the European championships because I wanted to win here. It makes it an awesome second pro season”.
Runner-up Enric Mas said: “I gave my best. Today, Paul [Seixas] was stronger than us. We have to enjoy how it went. I was feeling super so I had the confidence to try and be second. I knew Giulio Ciccone was a very fast rider in the sprint so I had to attack him. I’m not surprised to be up there almost one month after I won la Vuelta. I was feeling very good at training. The world championships were a disaster for me but I recovered. I felt better at the Tre Valli Varesine so I came to Il Lombardia with confidence. I’m happy to make the podium of this race for the second time”.
Third placed Giulio Ciccone said: “It was really hard. Today I was suffering a lot on the second last climb. I managed to find my own pace but the finale was very long for me because I was alone. But I can be happy with the result and the way I finish the season. Paul Seixas rode super fast up Civiglio and I made a small mistake to try and follow him. We know him. He’s super strong. Congrats to him. He’s very young. The way he won this Monument, he deserves it. As for myself, it’s my third podium in a Monument, my second here at Il Lombardia. The first place would have been better but I can be happy”.
