Here is the latest update for the UCI approved wheels list. It’s a short one, but the additions are from two big names.
Shimano adds their RS770-C30 wheel set. It features a carbon laminated rim, which means it has an aluminum base rim with a carbon faring bonded to it. The clincher rim is 28mm tall by 23mm wide externally and tubeless ready. The hub comes as a 12mm thru-axle with a mount for a centerlock disc.
Zipp sees their 858 NSW Carbon Clincher added in disc brake form. Similar to the 454 NSW, the 858 NSW uses the same biomimicry sawtooth design, but in a taller rim. Zipp claims the design makes for a wheel that is aerodynamically efficient while also able to manage crosswinds better than other wheels on the market. “Faster than an 808, handles like a 404.” At 1834g, it’s a respectable weight for a wheel that is between 77 and 82mm tall and 23.7mm wide externally (17mm wider internally).
The Cognition hubs use centerlock disc brakes and mount with thru-axles. The rear hub features their Axial Clutch design that just about eliminates all drag from the freewheel. At $4400 though, it is one of the most expensive wheels on the market.
