New year, new additions to the UCI Approved Frame and Wheel lists. After taking a break for the holiday season, we have a fresh list of frames and wheels that we could see under our favorite pros this coming season.
Frames
There were a handful of updates from December and a new frame from Stork in January, but one thing we also noticed is that brands are recycling their past approvals and marking them as Model Year 2018. Argon 18 did it with their Krypton frame, and Trek seemed to do on just about all of their top end frames. Most likely there are little to no changes, and it is just administrative, but still something to note.
De Rosa added their TT-03 time trial frame to the list. The brand’s only TT bike, it features many of the same style queues that we see in other high end TT and aero bikes, like rear tire hugging seat tube, integrated brakes on the back of the fork, chain stay rear brakes, and a clean transition from the frame to the fork. While not a completely integrated front cockpit, it keeps things neat and tidy, while still retaining adjustibility. Look for the TT-03 under the Caja Rural team in 2018.
Factor adds a 2017 version of their One aero road bike. While it eschews some of the traditional aero design found on other brands, the One features a split downtube with spindly seat stays and their One Total Integration System (OTIS) handlebar/stem combo. AG2R will continue to have the option to ride the One aero road bike, 02 all-rounder, or Slick TT bikes.
With probably the most whimsical name on the list, German brand Storck adds the Fascenario.3. A GC style road bike, it is said to balance aerodynamics, stiffness, and comfort in one tidy package. It’s not an all out aero bike, but it does incorporate some aero touches to help you get through the wind faster. The skinny seat says are sure to help with comfort on the back end. Storck leaves the brakes where they should, which makes adjustments easy. While not an inexpensive bike on any levels, Storck teamed up with Aston Martin to create a top of the line model with only 107 examples produced.
Wheels
The only additions came from Reynolds, but it was a big list, adding seven wheels in a range of sizes. Ranging from the dedicated Aero 65 and 80 to the more all-purpose Assult, Attack, and Strike, Reynolds now has a full range of wheels ready for pro teams to use. The ATR DB also adds a disc brake version to the list.
