UCI Approved Frames and Wheels List – Late April 2018 Update

Here is your latest update for the UCI Approved List for frames and wheels, as of 4/20/18.

For frames, it is a mix of big and small brands. Author (Czech Republic), Borant (Russia), Cello (South Korea), Hrinkow (Austria), and Laminar (Taiwan) highlight the vast array of smaller brands. There isn’t a lot of info on them, but the new additions are mainly road bikes with a TT bike.

English brand Genesis adds their top of the line Zero as a disc version to the list. The Madison Genesis team will have their own version of the frame available for sale.

Giant shows their commitment to disc brakes on the road with the Defy Advanced and Liv Envie Advanced being added to the list, but it is interesting to see that the Propel Advanced rim brake version was also added. The rim brake version of the Propel isn’t currently listed on their page, so it could be an error on the UCI’s part or maybe something new we will see for the upcoming Grand Tours.

Orbea adds their Orca Aero Disc. The Orca Aero is the aero version of their all-around race bike, the Orca. It will be interesting to see how the discs brakes will be integrated into the freeflow fork design that bows the fork blades outward to allow air to flow more freely between the fork and the wheel.

On the wheel side, additions come in from Attaquebike, Citec, FFWD, Pacenti, and Reynolds.

German brand Citec adds a number of wheels to the list. My high school German isn’t the best, but my first impression when seeing the Citec 8000 Ultra is that it is an updated Mad Fiber design. It features a carbon/aluminum rim with full carbon spokes. At a claimed 1495g, it makes for an extremely light wheel at an 80mm depth. The 8000 Ultra 63 is a similar design, but in a shorter rim height. The CX wheels take a more traditional approach with metal spokes.

FFWD added a disc brake tubular, and some carbon clinchers in all kinds of depths. One of the great things about FFWD wheels, you can get them at multiple price points, depending on which of the DT Swiss hubs you use. Whether it is the 180, 240, or 350, there are usually options for each wheel.

American brand Pacenti adds their Carbon 45 wheels. Available in disc and rim brake form, the carbon rims are tubular only for now.

Reynolds is also all-in on disc brakes in their latest update. The Aero 46 and 65 incorporate new rim shapes from Reynolds. The Assault, Attack, and Strike all get added as disc brake options, along with Assault LE and Assault LE 650b wheels. The addition of the 650b sized wheel is unique that it is one of the few, if not the first 650b to hit the list.
